Southampton Solent University was pleased to host the Audio Engineering Society’s Up Your Output! event this past weekend (18th & 19th of March), co-organised by ISVR, University of Southampton. This annual event, which has run since 2011, offered students and recent graduates the opportunity to learn, network, and develop both friendships and career opportunities.
Around 80 delegates enjoyed this year’s Solent Acoustics conference ‘Acoustics in the Built Environment’, held on Friday 4 April at Solent Conference Centre. The conference has proved to be once again a great success thanks to insightful and interesting presentations from guest speakers and a lively Q&A debate. Keynote presenters included Nicholas Jones from Hilson Moran, who examined a range of his company’s most interesting and challenging installations. Phil McIlwain from The City of Westminster Council explained a few of the recent legislative changes and codes of practice from the local authority perspective. Kyriakos Papanagiotou from KP Acoustics discussed ‘Echotectonics’ (TM) his innovative new approach to noise assessment, while Jonty Stewart from Wight Noise investigated various causes of partition failures and dicussed how to avoid them.
Solent Acoustics are pleased to offer our Institute of Acoustics accredited short courses the for the 2014 period.
This year we are once again running our popular Certificates of Competency in both Building Acoustic Measurement and Environmental Noise Measurement. These courses run for a 1 week intensive period, and offer an excellent introduction to the world of acoustics to people that may not need more formal qualifications in acoustics, but want to get a working knowledge of the principles.
The courses are all a week long, and run on the following dates:
Certificates of Competency in Building Acoustic Measurement courses begin on:
- 7th April
- 15th September
Certificates of Competency in Environmental Noise Measurement courses begin on:
- 12th May
- 6th October

Solent Acoustics are pleased to announce our next professional conference, “Acoustics in the Built Environment”.
Following on from the success of last year’s conference “Noise in Music and Entertainment”, this one day event targets professionals in the Built Environment sector who would like to learn more about the acoustic issues faced by building projects from design to construction and beyond.
The event will involve presentations from 4 prominent keynote speakers, along with an open questions panel, and will be relevant to Architects, Architectural Technologists, Building Control Officers, Chartered Surveyors, Environment Health Officers, Health and Safety officers and Site Managers as well as Acousticians.
Subjects covered will include:
- What makes a building fail on pre-completion testing and how to prevent it.
- Legislative requirements and issues for conventional and unusual builds (non-domestic issues, listed buildings, ‘common’ spaces in apartment buildings).
- Noise and noise monitoring in construction and demolition sites
- Acoustic issues in specialist and non-domestic buildings (Aesthetics, Acoustic Privacy, Technological Solutions).
- Nick Jones (Hilson Moran)
- Phil McIlwain (Wisemill Acoustics)
- Kyriakos Papanagiotou (KP Acoustics)
- Jonty Stewart (Wight Noise)
The event will take place at the Solent Conference Centre, Southampton Solent University, on Friday 4 April 2014.
